Domain dark matter: 31 million domains delegated but never graded

Every census that quotes one big domain number hides a smaller one. The September 2026 edition delegated 347,691,016 domains from the zone files it reads, and it could grade 316,600,902 of them. The 31,090,114 in between are the ones that exist on paper and never gave the scanner a usable answer. This is the internet’s dark matter: counted, delegated, and effectively dark.

What the gap is made of

The gap is 8.94% of the delegated inventory, and it splits cleanly in two. About 15,224,614 domains were unreachable: the scanner could not complete the DNS or connection work needed to grade them at all. Another 15,865,500 were indeterminate: they answered, but not consistently enough to resolve into a grade. Add those and you get 31,090,114, the exact distance between the inventory and the graded set.

Only 1,389,076 domains, 0.40% of the inventory, are dead in the strict sense of no longer resolving. So the dark matter is mostly not dead. It is delegated names that a registry still lists and a nameserver still claims, which fall over or contradict themselves the moment anyone actually asks.

Why it matters when you read a headline

A grade share only means something against the population it was measured on. When a report says a share of the web fails a check, the honest denominator is the graded set, 316,600,902, because that is what the scanner could actually assess. Quote the same percentage against the full 347.7 million inventory and you have quietly folded in 31 million domains nobody could grade, which moves the number without measuring anything. The dark matter is also why census editions cannot be differenced as a trend. The September existence pass removed a large slice of names that earlier counts carried, so the denominator itself changed. A drop in a failure share can be composition, not the internet getting safer.
