A record

Also known as: address record

The setting that points your web address at the actual server running your website — the link between your name and where your site lives.

What it is

An A record connects your domain name to the numbered address (an “IP address”) of the computer that hosts your website. When someone types your web address, this is the record that says “the website is over here.” Without it — or with it pointing to the wrong place — visitors can’t reach your site.

Why it matters to your business

The A record is the bridge between your name and your website. If it’s wrong or left pointing at an old host you’ve stopped using, your site can go offline or, worse, show a stranger’s content under your name. When you move web hosts or redesign your site, updating the A record is what makes the new site go live. Getting it right keeps your shopfront open and on your own premises.

How to tell / what to do

The free check confirms your domain points to a live web server. If your site isn’t loading as expected, the A record is one of the first things to verify with whoever hosts your website. It’s a standard setting at your domain provider and costs nothing to correct.
